Travelling love
The hardest part of a
relationship is the break up. Steve found it especially difficult to deal with
it. It was tough to frequent the same places, to drive by where they had their
first kiss, to have many friends in common and to try to act natural meanwhile
he was internally crying.
That is why he decided
to have a different approach: why should he stay at the same places, remember
the good old times and see her face everywhere, while he could just travel and
leave it all behind? The love for traveling and being able to speak 13
different languages made his plans easier. After the break up with Maria he
flew off from Brazil, promising to never return. It was the language, the
climate, the cities and the food. The way that she cooked brigadeiro and the feeling of "saudade" when they weren't together anymore. All the moments
that they shared was there, in each corner. It was just impossible to live there
by himself.
Trying to avoid
tropical climates, he went to Russia. But while he was traveling, some months
after the break up, he met Alexandra (Александра), who teach him how to dance the Polka, how to eat the shashlik (the Russian
barbecue) and how to drink. The nights that they spent together were less
colder and the life was more colorful. It was terrible when the inevitable
happened and that was the last day that he stayed in Russia. Even trying his
best, he couldn’t avoid the charm of Carmen in Spain, the fateful encounter
with Susan in the USA or even how fun and delightful talking with Meifeng was, when
he visited in China.
Neither of these times
he was searching for a relationship nor trying to fall in love, it just
happened. After none of these relationships worked, he started to believe that
he was the problem, and maybe he was, with his adventurous lifestyle, the
desire to discover new things and never settling down. There was no one right
to him, until he met Gaia.
It wasn't the first
encounter that changed his life, it was the second one. The first was in Beijing,
China, and the second in Canada three weeks after that. What were the odds of
finding someone two times in a row in two places so different?
During that afternoon,
they discovered that they had more things in common than they imagined. Some
places that they visited, the languages they could speak, their dreams and
sense of humor. One month after they had started seriously dating, he said in
Hungary that he loved her. But Hungary wasn't one of the languages that she
could speak and he knew it. For the first time he really believed that it could
work and he was afraid of ruining all his chances. She answered something using
a language that he couldn’t understand and a smile. Slowly, trying each of the
languages that they knew, their feelings could reach each other, and they realized
that they were using a language that both could comprehend since the beginning:
the language of love.
There were amazing years,
traveling around the world together - something that both loved. They could learn languages, visit new places,
understand new cultures, and grow together. They were happy, the happily ever
after. But as anyone can imagine, nowadays, “ever” is shorter than before.
After seven years and three
months, like a salmon, they returned to the same place where everything begun. It
wasn`t easy for any of them, but the relationship just wasn`t working anymore. He
felt his heart being crushed. None of the 16 languages that he could speak had
the right word to describe all the pain and sadness inside his chest. He opened
his map, trying to decide where should be his next destination, anywhere that
hadn’t memories of them. The map that he always used after his break ups gained
another use during the last seven years, they started reading the map together to
decide their next destination. There were still some notes with her handwriting
about what they liked and what they didn’t like in each place. They had traveled
everywhere. Just seeing the map or hearing the sound of a plane made him feel
like his heart was being stabbed again and again. He needed to go somewhere
else, a place that they had never been before.
It took time and a
long journey to go to the only place that he thought that would be free,
however walking on the moon and looking at the Earth, he still couldn't forget
Gaia. Having only the loneliness of the space as company, he discovered that the
human heart can still feel pain in zero G.
Obviously, he couldn't
see anyone specific on Earth, but if he could, he would realize that Maria and Alexandra
were both married and happy. Carmen never married, but this never bothered her,
she was happy and fulfilled by herself. Meifeng had just met a person that
could be the love of her life. Susan still was struggling, jumping from a
relationship to another, and Gaia wasn’t feeling ready to move on, but someday
she would be. As Steve and Gaia still had to realize, space can help but can't
heal a heart, only time can.
Amor
viajante
A parte
A forma
sorriso no rosto.
Eles aprenderam
novas línguas e culturas, visitaram novos lugares e cresceram juntos. Eles
No
Amazing that you wrote this story in both languages. Overall, loved the story, great analogies and metaphors. Pretty profound and deep stuff!
ResponderExcluirThank you Grace for taking the time to read and comment! I hope you enjoyed reading it in Portuguese!
