The legend said that a beast with golden
hearts live inside the forest. It is immortal, because every time that one of
the hearts is ripped, a new one would grow and replace it. This is the story of
the person who made the god angry and was punished with love.

The stolen hearts' forest
There was a
temple for the land god around the village. The god was responsible for the
mountain, the forest and the earth where the village was constructed. He would
help the crops grow and protect that place from natural disasters, the only
thing that he wanted in return was someone by his side. Each generation, he appeared and walked
through the village until he found someone worthy of his love. It is said that
if the person corresponded his love, the person would be happy during the rest
of their life, living with him.
When she
was just a kid, a certain woman decided that she would do anything that she
could to be the chosen one and marry him. She grew and turned into a noble,
rich and very influential woman, and received countless marriage proposal, but
she didn’t want any of them. She knew that she needed a love worthy of her, and
the only one that could give this was the land god. The promise of a life of
happiness made her wait for years, rejecting all the other admirers. All over
the village people started to gossip that she was crazy, and maybe she really was crazy. Crazy for love.
Finally,
when she turned 20, the god appeared. She was already too old to marry someone,
but the legends said that the god didn’t choose purely based on the age, appearance
or status, the person needed to do something to prove to be worthy.
The woman
had wealth, status and even being old, she still was pretty. She wore the best
clothes of the whole village, and went to meet the god.
The god
walked down the street saying “good morning” to everyone. Every time that he
visited the village, he assumed the form of a man like any other. He walked
barefoot, with simple cotton clothes and the only distinct characteristic was
the long and green braided hair. Usually took days or weeks until he decided,
but not this time. The noblewoman was waiting at the end of the street, right
in front of her castle, however the god stopped at a farm, looked to a peasant
and smile. She smiled back. It was love at the first sight.
He returned
almost every day, but never went to meet the noblewoman. He always just stopped
at the farm and talked with the peasant. She was just a commoner, with worn
clothes and mud on the hair. She wasn’t beautiful or rich or polite, but every
time that he looked at her, he couldn’t stop a smile appearing on his face,
neither her. After one week the noblewoman realized that she would not be
chosen, unless she did something big to impress him and desperate she had an
idea. The next day, she went to his shrine at the base of the mountain with
what he wanted the most, in her hands she carried a golden bowl with the heart
of the peasant.
The god
could see inside a person and he knew that it wasn’t a menace against him. In
her head, a commoner live wasn’t important, and having her heart inside a
golden bowl being offered to the god would be an honor. Even knowing that she
wasn’t evil, she just wanted to impress him, there was no way that he could forgive her for killing the person that he had fallen in love. The noblewoman
was cursed, she would be half human and half beast and would live eternally in
the forest. Her heart becomes pure gold, and every time that she lost a heart a
new one would grow in a hole in her chest.
Sometimes
drive by curiosity, others by greed, people went to the forest, but not
everyone returned safely. That forest was a dangerous and strange place, and
getting lost there was something common.
Dozens of
days after the transformation a handsome man appeared. It was the first human
that she had meet since then, and being lonely and vulnerable, it is easy to
deduce that he stole her heart. Literally. He waited until she was asleep and violently
grabbed it. She woke up with the pain of her heart being torn from her chest
and saw the man running away.
Strangely, no
one that held the heart had problems leaving the forest. Maybe that was also a
part of the curse, due to her being unable to leave that place it was
impossible for her retrieve her heart or get revenge.
Many years
passed and other people would always come to the forest. Sometimes men, other times, women.
Knights sent by the king, trying to kill the monster. Thieves trying to become
rich, and rarely a lost person that didn’t want to be there. Arthurio was one
of those cases.
“Are you lost too?” Arthurio asked when he saw
her for the first time. “We can try to search for the exit together”
“I am not
lost, I live here”
“Why?”
“Don’t you
know who I am? I am the heartless monster that lives in this forest”
“You look
like a human, and to be sincere you have a beautiful face”
She really
had a beautiful face, together with immortality she had received eternal youth.
However, couldn’t he see the horns, the hooves, her arms covered in blood and
the open hole in her chest? She wasn’t human anymore.
Apparently,
Arthurio still considered her one. He extended his arm trying to reach her hand,
and instinctively she protected her heart. Saying no more, she disappeared into
the forest. She didn’t believe in what he said. Other people had already tried
the same trick: they pretend that they didn’t want the heart, or that truly
loved her when at the bottom they were just toying with her feelings to satisfy
their own greed intentions. Her body still remembered the pain when someone
discovered that the blood from her heart solidify and become gold when it
touched the soil, but it was only possible to cut it if the heart was still
inside the chest. This information quickly spread, and everyone decided to try
it. She shivered, remembering that.
To prove
her point, during the next night she decided to intentionally sleep next to him.
She wanted to see what he would do when she was vulnerable; then, she pretended
to be asleep while being ready to defend herself at any time.
Arthurio
got closer to her and she tensed her body. She really wanted him to be
different from all the others, that was what she always hoped for, but if he
touched her heart it would be the last thing that he would do. He just took a
leaf of her hair, walked away and slept all night.
It won’t
take long for her to start enjoying his company. She liked the way that he
looked to her, as if she was just someone normal. She liked the sensation of
her hand in his hair and beard; their conversations and laughs; and many other
small details that were insignificant to almost everyone, but important to her,
and it would be necessary one thousand and eighty eight words to describe. The
only aspect that she didn’t like was the way that his smile faded day after
day.
“I have a
present for you. Close your eyes and extend your hands”
He did it.
Carefully, she put her golden heart in his hands.
“What is
this?”
“My heart.
Everyone that had one of these could leave the forest without problems, I want
you to be able to leave this place and return to the place that you belong to”
“What
happened with the ones that didn’t have? Could they never return home?”
“I am not
sure, but you don’t have to worry. This will guide you”
He looked
to the precious golden heart, that somehow was still warm and pulsing, and
looked to her.
“Sorry, I
can’t accept it. I admire how you can make yourself vulnerable to someone like
me, but love is trusting each other and being able to reciprocate this feeling.
Right now, I can´t do the same, I cannot rip my heart out and give to you”
“It is
obvious that you can’t, because you are human”
“No, I
mean... yes. I can’t rip my heart out because I am human, but what I want to say
is that I don’t have my heart anymore, in a figurative way. Recently, I lost
someone really important to me, and my heart was buried together with this
person. After that I decided to travel and that is why I am here. I am trying
to heal and accept fate.
He wrapped
his arm around her.
“By the
stories that you told me, it was painful having your heart broken and stolen
over and over. That is why you should take good care of your own heart now and
protect it, instead of giving away to someone else”
Gently he
returned the golden heart to the place that it belongs.
“What will
you do?” She asked.
“I will
wander through the forest and find the exit by myself. Will you be okay?”
No. She
would not. She would feel lonely all day and all night. She would hate the
earth and the sky, she knew it, however, when she opened the mouth, all that
she could say was “Yes”.
How could
she say anything else if it was clearly looking into his eyes that he still
loved someone else? Maybe he would stay another two or three days, but it
wouldn’t be love, only pity, and he would end leaving anyway.
He departed
without looking back a single time and the forest was silent again. It was
weird. It was the first time that someone left and she didn’t feel the whole in
her chest being fulfilled with sadness and angriness. Instead, it was a warm
but painful feeling of having a heart inside her again. She remembered all the
times that she was betrayed when she thought that had found love, and all the
times that she betrayed them fearing that she would be hurt again. She
remembered the things that she did when she was still a human and for the first
time since then, started crying, letting all the emotions that she had bottled
up flow; washing her hands full of blood and her impure golden heart.
Even crying
like a human, she knew deep down that she was a monster even before being
cursed. That wasn’t a fairy tale, there was no love or way to break the curse,
but slowly she would learn how to live by herself and would accept who she was.
She was a monster, but not a heartless one; she was a monster with one hundred stolen hearts and an unstolen one.
Ele iria ajudar as plantações a crescerem e
merecedora.
A mulher tinha riqueza, status
Ela vestiu as melhores roupas do
A nobre estava
viu o homem sair correndo.
a floresta. Algumas vezes homens, outras vezes, mulheres. Cavaleiros enviados
imortalidade ela havia obtido juventude eterna.
intencionalmente dormir perto dele.
as mãos.
meu coração, no sentido figurado.
Eu estou tentando me
pertencia
– O que você vai fazer? – ela perguntou.
– Eu irei vagar pela floresta e achar a saída sozinho. Você
vai ficar bem?
Não. Ela não iria. Ela se sentiria sozinha a noite e o dia
todo. Ela iria odiar o céu e a terra, ela sabia disso.
floresta ficou silenciosa novamente.
vez desde então, começou a chorar, deixando todas as emoções acumuladas fluir;
